Modeling & Prototyping
Sunblock Formulation for the Base
Procedure
- Measure out 20g of Shea Butter.
- Measure out 5g of Coconut Oil.
- Place all 20g of Shea Butter into a 250mL beaker.
- Place half (2.5g) of the Coconut Oil into the same 250mL beaker with the Shea Butter.
- Place the beaker on a hotplate and turn to “high”.
- Place the other half of the Coconut Oil(2.5g) into a second 250mL beaker.
- Once melted, place the Coconut Oil and Shea Butter solution into the second 250mL beaker, pour over the second half of Coconut Oil.
- Add 5mL of water that has been run through used coffee grounds.
- Place in freezer for 1 hour.
- Remove from freezer.
- Stir in 5mL of coffee water to emulsify.

- Add the Olive Oil. (See below for amounts for each different formula.)
- Stir.
As an experimentation group, we came to this mixture as a suitable sunscreen for many reasons. We decided that this combination used the least materials, provided the best consistency. After multiple trials we found that the other solutions were either too oily or didn’t provide adequate protection.
